I'm a new scanner, bought the HP-1. I want to upgrade the antenna and I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Diamond 789. 2 questions and I apologize if they seem simplistic. Do I need a dual or tri band antenna? What is the difference between SMA and BNC?

thanks

SMA and BNC refer to the type of antenna connection. The HP-1 comes with and SMA connector. BNC is also a common scanner connection, but you need an SMA/BNC adapter to connect a BNC antenna to the HP-1.

BNC looks like a quick disconnect, so I might get BNC and the adapter. thanks

If you are going to regularly disconnect the antenna, you may find the BNC with an adapter easier to cope with. The SMA connection screws on.

I've been using the BNC version of the the 77CA for years, and it's a great UHF/VHF antenna. The only cons are it's a little heavy, and mediocre on 800MHz.

Have you tried the 77CA on the HP-1? And other than size how does it compare to the SRH789 for UHF/VHF?

I haven't tried the 77CA on the HP-1 since I don't have a BNC adapter. But from experience with using it on my other radios, I think the UHF/VHF performance is similar. Both are excellent.

SMA to BNC?

A little pricey, but it allows you some flexibility.
